Our Mission

Six commitments that guide the Burmese Islamic Association of Colorado in serving religious life and community relationships in Denver.

Mission statement

What we exist to do

The Burmese Islamic Association of Colorado exists to support religious life and spiritual development by providing a place for Islamic worship and learning, by fostering respectful and responsible community relationships, and by managing the trust placed in it with transparency and care.

The mission is expressed through six commitments. Each one is described below, together with why it matters in practice. These commitments describe the purposes that guide the association; for details of current activities and arrangements, please see Programs & Activities or contact us.

01

Supporting Islamic worship

Worship is at the heart of Muslim life, and prayer is its most regular expression. Supporting worship means making sure there is a suitable, dedicated place where people can pray, both individually and in congregation, with dignity and peace of mind.

In practical terms, this involves the ongoing care of a place of worship: keeping it clean and orderly, safe for those who attend, and organized so that worship can take place without disruption. It also means making accurate information available to those who want to attend.

Why it matters: without a reliable place of worship, practicing the faith in community becomes harder, especially for families and newcomers who have no other local connection.

02

Encouraging religious and spiritual development

Islam treats the pursuit of knowledge and the refinement of character as lifelong duties. Spiritual development is not limited to rituals; it includes honesty, patience, generosity, and the way a person treats family, neighbors, and strangers.

The association encourages this development by providing a setting for worship and learning, by valuing sincere and respectful religious discussion, and by helping community members connect their faith with everyday conduct.

Why it matters: spiritual growth helps individuals live with purpose and integrity, and communities made up of such individuals are stronger, kinder, and more trustworthy.

03

Providing a community-oriented Islamic centre

An Islamic centre serves the community best when it is more than a building that opens and closes. A community-oriented centre is a place where people feel they belong, where they can meet one another, and where they can find help in navigating religious questions.

The association works to keep its centre welcoming and accessible, and to ensure that people know how to reach the organization with questions or concerns.

Why it matters: a sense of belonging protects people from isolation, helps families pass on their faith, and gives the community a shared home.

04

Promoting respectful interaction

Islamic teaching places great weight on good manners, courtesy, and the rights of others. The association promotes respectful interaction among the people it serves and between its community and the wider public.

This means treating all visitors and enquirers with courtesy, discussing religious matters with sincerity and humility, and recognizing that people come to the centre with different backgrounds, needs, and levels of knowledge.

Why it matters: respect builds trust. In a diverse city like Denver, respectful interaction helps neighbors understand one another and live well together.

05

Supporting responsible community relationships

A religious organization is part of a neighborhood and a city. Responsible community relationships mean being a considerate neighbor, communicating openly, and conducting the association's activities in a way that reflects well on the community and respects the people around it.

The association welcomes contact from neighbors and members of the public who wish to learn about it or raise a question.

Why it matters: strong, honest relationships with the surrounding community help an organization serve its members well over the long term.

06

Encouraging transparency and responsible stewardship

The association relies on the support of its community, including donations of money and property. Stewardship means treating every contribution as a trust: managing it carefully, using it for the association's nonprofit purposes, and being honest about how the organization operates.

Transparency begins with the basics. The association publishes its legal name, 501(c)(3) status, EIN, physical address, and official email on every page of this website, and directs donors to contact it directly with questions.

Why it matters: in Islamic ethics, fulfilling a trust (amanah) is a serious obligation. Responsible stewardship protects donors, protects the organization, and protects the community's confidence in it.
